Our safari guide Emmy Gongo picked us up in the morning, following some minor confusion about the address. His Land Cruiser arrived, and we were off in style.
We drove across Rwanda, crossed back into Uganda, and up into the mountains toward Biwindi Impenetrable Forest, home of half the world’s wild mountain gorillas. We had stunning views of the Virunga volcano chain, which separates the countries and shelters the other half.
The forest is beautiful and well preserved, but the borders are starkly demarcated with a sharp edge of planted eucalyptus trees, and then cleared and terraced hillsides. I am glad Emmy and others are fighting to keep the forest wild.
We stayed at his beautiful Broadbill Camp, and were warmly received with a great meal and a crackling fire. Time to journal, and fall asleep to the sounds of the forest.
