The city is still clearly recovering from the earthquakes of 2011, but it has a unique urban spirit and a classic English design.
We stayed in a nice hotel by Latimer Square, which is just a 15 minute walk from the center of town. But many of the intervening blocks are empty, because so many buildings were demolished after the earthquakes. There are some fine examples of urban placemaking and DIY design, but it still feels awfully lonely.
The Quake City museum does a great job at showing the devastation, the peoples’ response, and the progress rebuilding. I love this video of kids skateboarding on the newly created obstacles.
Off to Sydney tomorrow to continue our adventures!
